Greek Language and Culture

Courses 2010

The program is organized modularly and offered in English.     


Course 1

(Designed for true beginners - A1,A2 level )

a. Morphology/syntax: introduction to the Greek language, familiarization with the Greek alphabet, writing and reading, declension of verbs in present tense, basic groups of nouns and adjectives in the singular nominative and accusative cases, place and time prepositions,plural of basic noun and adjective groups in the nominative and accusative cases, simple future tense and simple subjunctive of the active voice verbs of the first and second conjugation, first acquaintance with simple past tense etc.

b. Vocabulary/communicative functions: Basic vocabulary. The student will be able to make introductions, to give basic information about him/herself or other persons, to describe basic activities and to take part in basic everyday dialogues.

c. Vocabulary/communicative functions: Enrichment of the basic vocabulary. The student will be able to communicate using present, past and future tenses, to talk about everyday situations (e.g. home, weather etc.) in a simple and brief way, to give simple descriptions and make simple comparisons, and to take part in everyday simple dialogues.

Gourse 2

 (Created for beginners with a basic knowledge and advanced learners - A3,B1 level )

a. Morphology/syntax: simple past tense of the regular and irregular active voice verbs, personal pronouns in the nominative, accusative and genitive cases, simple imperative, 1st conditional type, introduction to the passive voice verbs, genitive case of nouns and adjectives, pronouns, conjunctions and basic linking of sentences indicative of the rest of the tenses in the active voice and of important passive voice verbs, distinction of the aspect of the verb, time, causative and adversative conjunctions, 2nd conditional type etc.


b. Vocabulary/communicative functions: Further enrichment of the basic vocabulary.         
       The student will be able to express him/herself both orally and in writing in usual everyday situations using simple speech and to comprehend simple texts, announcements, instructions and conversations about familiar issues.The student talks about issues of more general interest (e.g. family, health, work etc.), narrates stories expressing time relations and participates in discussions about familiar issues expressing his/her opinion and putting forward his/her arguments.

Course 3

  (created for students with a good knowledge of the Greek language - B2 level )

a. Morphology/syntax: Passive voice, interrogative and relative pronouns, adverbs, conditionals, participles, special noun and adjective groups. Completion of the basic grammar (nouns of a special declension, compound verbs, subjunctive linking of sentences etc.)

b. Vocabulary /communicative functions: Vocabulary expansion in thematic units, first acquaintance with the vernacular language proverbs) and the official language (writing formal letters). Further vocabulary expansion on the basis of various thematic units, first contact with short newspaper and magazine texts or with simple literature texts. The student will be able to express adequately opinions and feelings and to communicate in various situations.

Course 4

 (created for students with a great knowledge of the Greek language - C1 level )

a. Morphology/syntax: Revision and thorough examination of issues of special difficulty from previously learned grammar and emphasis on the production of complicated speech using the subjunctive linking of sentences. Teaching of compound verbs deriving from ancient Greek verbs often encountered in the modern Greek language and emphasis on their use through vocabulary exercises or free production of speech.

b. Vocabulary/communicative functions: Communicative ability in a wide range of situations, ability to understand and use idiomatic expressions concerning the modern Greek civilization. Comprehension of simple texts from the everyday and periodical press as well as of selected literature texts. original texts of increased difficulty, aiming mainly at the enrichment of the vocabulary and practicing the use of special language structures through social issues. Comprehension of original recorded extracts from radio or TV programmes and production of speech using these sources.

Course Requisitions

Minimal participation in a Greek language and culture course includes regular attendance, preparing for the lessons (reading), and taking part in discussions. Sometimes, the course subjects require extra lessons or excursions, which, although maybe exceeding the normal 90 minutes per week, belong to the regular class and attendance is mandatory. Teachers (Professors) will schedule midterm exams and final exams as part of their course requirements and/or demand a research paper on individual subjects.

You will be assigned to the different language and grammar courses according to the results of your placement test.
